Executive Coaching

Leadership at the top can be a lonely place. Having the right thinking partner makes a significant difference.

The higher you go in an organisation, the fewer people there are who can offer genuinely honest, informed and confidential challenge. Executive coaching provides exactly that; a dedicated space to think clearly, develop your leadership and navigate the complex realities of operating at a senior level. Our coaches bring real-world senior leadership experience, not just coaching technique, to every engagement.

The challenge

Senior leaders face a particular kind of pressure that is rarely acknowledged openly.

The expectations are significant and growing. You are required to set direction in conditions of genuine uncertainty, make decisions with incomplete information, hold your team together through constant change, manage upwards to a board or investors whilst leading downwards into a complex organisation, and maintain the personal resilience and clarity of thinking that effective leadership demands.

At the same time, the usual outlets for reflection and challenge are limited. Your peers are often your competitors. Your direct reports look to you for answers rather than seeing your uncertainties. Your line manager, where one exists, may be too distant from the operational reality to be genuinely useful. And the culture of most senior leadership teams does not naturally create space for honest conversation about what is hard, what is not working, or where you personally need to grow.

The result is that many senior leaders make important decisions, navigate significant challenges and develop their leadership in relative isolation. Not because they lack the self-awareness to know they would benefit from support, but because the right kind of support is rarely available in the right way.

How we help

Our executive coaching provides senior leaders with a high-quality, confidential thinking partnership, focused entirely on their development, their challenges and their effectiveness as a leader.

Our coaches bring significant real-world experience of senior leadership and organisational life, not just coaching technique. This means conversations are grounded in the genuine complexity of operating at an executive level, rather than remaining at a conceptual or theoretical distance from the realities your leaders are navigating day to day.

We work with a wide range of senior leaders, including chief executives, chief people officers, HR directors, managing directors, senior partners and functional leaders at director level. The coaching is always tailored to the individual, their specific context, their goals and the challenges they are currently facing.

Our approach draws on evidence-based methodologies including positive psychology, systems thinking and leadership development frameworks. The emphasis throughout is on building the coachee’s capacity for self-directed learning and long-term effectiveness, rather than providing advice or short-term fixes.

How a coaching engagement works

Every coaching engagement begins with a three-way conversation involving the coachee, their line manager and the coach. This session clarifies the objectives, success measures and organisational context for the coaching, ensuring that what happens in the coaching room is aligned with both the individual’s development goals and the priorities of the business. This matters because good executive coaching is not just a personal investment. It is an organisational one, and both parties should be clear about what they are working towards.

The core of the engagement is typically six one-to-one sessions delivered over several months. Each session provides a structured but flexible space for reflection, challenge and the exploration of real situations your leader is currently navigating. Between sessions, coachees are encouraged to apply new thinking and approaches in their actual work, test different behaviours and gather feedback, so that learning is continuously connected to practice rather than remaining in the coaching room.

The engagement concludes with a wrap-up session that brings the coachee and line manager back together to review progress against the original objectives, acknowledge what has shifted and agree the ongoing development actions that will sustain the change beyond the formal coaching period. This closing accountability step is one of the things that distinguishes coaching that embeds real change from coaching that simply feels valuable at the time.

Where appropriate, we integrate psychometric tools and structured feedback into coaching engagements, including DISC, MBTI, LPI and others, to give leaders an evidence-based view of their strengths, blind spots and development priorities. This ensures the coaching is grounded in real data rather than relying solely on self-perception.

Coaching is delivered in whatever format works best for the individual, whether in person, virtually or a blend of both.

What executive coaching with Tap'd addresses

Whilst every coaching engagement is unique, the themes our clients most commonly bring to coaching include:

Transition and new role effectiveness. Moving into a new senior role brings a particular set of challenges. Coaching helps leaders make that transition effectively, establishing credibility quickly, understanding the new landscape and developing the leadership approach the role requires.

Strategic thinking and decision making. Creating the space and discipline to think clearly about the bigger picture, cut through complexity and make decisions with confidence, even when the information is imperfect and the stakes are high.

Leadership style and impact. Understanding how you come across as a leader, the impact you have on others, and where adjusting your style or approach could significantly improve your effectiveness and the culture around you.

Managing and influencing stakeholders. Navigating complex stakeholder relationships, including boards, investors, peers and senior clients, with greater skill, confidence and strategic intent.

Building and leading high-performing teams. Developing the specific leadership behaviours that create high-performing, psychologically safe teams, and addressing the dynamics that are currently getting in the way.

Personal resilience and sustainable performance. Developing the habits, boundaries and mental disciplines that allow senior leaders to perform consistently over time without burning out. This is an area where our broader research into sustainable performance and HR leader wellbeing gives us particular depth.

Navigating organisational complexity. Understanding and working effectively within the political and structural realities of complex organisations, without compromising your values or your effectiveness.

Preparing for the next step. Whether considering a move to a larger role, a board position or a different kind of leadership challenge, coaching provides the space to think clearly about what you want, what it requires and how to get there.

Coaching as part of a wider programme

Executive coaching works well as a standalone offer, but it also integrates naturally with our wider work. We regularly combine individual coaching with group or team interventions, including leadership development programmes, senior team effectiveness work and 360-degree feedback processes.

This means that the insights and commitments that emerge from individual coaching can be reinforced and applied in the wider organisational context, and that team-level work is supported and deepened by individual reflection and development.

What you can expect

Leaders who engage in executive coaching with Tap’d typically report greater clarity of thinking and decision making, stronger self-awareness and a more conscious understanding of their leadership impact, improved confidence in navigating complex and high-stakes situations, better relationships with key stakeholders, and a greater sense of personal sustainability and resilience in the role.

Beyond the individual, the organisations they lead typically benefit too. When senior leaders develop their effectiveness, the impact flows through everything they touch, their teams, their decisions, their culture and their results.

In practice

We have provided executive coaching to senior leaders across a wide range of sectors and organisational contexts, including technology, financial services, professional services, the public sector and not-for-profit organisations. Our coaches combine formal coaching qualifications with genuine senior leadership experience, which means they understand the world your leaders are operating in, not just the theory of how to develop within it.
