Selecting the best at Compass Group UK & Ireland

Melanie Hayes, Resourcing & Development Director, Compass Group UKI – a FTSE 100 organisation with 60,000 employees – wanted a better way to find exceptional talent for the varied roles across the organisation. Traditionally each division had operated a varied selection process which was making internal talent progression challenging.

Our approach

Tap’d Solutions were tasked with designing a unified approach to selection for managers across all of its divisions, which ensured simplicity, effectiveness and alignment. Through one-to-one interviews our consultants reviewed the needs of all the stakeholder groups from recruiters to business leaders, hiring managers, candidates and the HR team.

From these insights we identified the key elements that a streamlined process would need to be effective across the diverse divisions of the Compass Group UKI. In addition, a need was identified for overt standards to select against.

By dissecting the “Compass DNA” values and standards, a question bank was developed for a consistent, valid and reliable approach to interviewing. By applying the use of Manager Selector assessments by IBM Kenexa a robust and unbiased key selection step was added, further ensuring the best people were identified for each manager role.

The results

Following training of Resourcing Managers, Recruitment Partners and HR Heads, a manager communication strategy was developed and implemented to engage line managers throughout Compass UK&I using various media including short video clips to engage this critical yet very busy set of stakeholders.

Initial feedback has been positive with an improved candidate experience and a reduced time to hire. As line managers conduct multiple hires using this self-sustaining process, it will enable internal talent identification to be quicker and easier.
